Giulio Tremonti

Minister of Economy and Finance, Italy

Giulio Tremonti was born in Sondrio on August 18, 1947.

Academic career

A professor since 1974, he is currently a full professor at the University of Pavia Law School. He is the author of various publications including : La paura e la speranza - Europa : la crisi globale che si avvicina e la via per superarla (2008), Rischi fatali - L’Europa vecchia, la Cina, il mercatismo suicida : come reagire (2005), Lo Stato criminogeno (1997), Il fantasma della povertà (1995). With G. Vitaletti : Le cento tasse degli italiani (1986), La fiera delle tasse (1991), Il federalismo fiscale (1994). Giulio Tremonti has been a visiting professor at the Institute of Comparative Law, Oxford. He has participated in many debates and conferences in Italy and abroad ("Oxford Union Society" ; "Cambridge Union Society" ; "Humboldt Universität" ; "Party School of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China"). He is co-editor of Rivista di diritto finanziario e scienza delle finanze (Review of tax law and financial sciences). He is a member of the Moral Sciences class of the Lombard Academy of Sciences and Letters. He is Chairman of Aspen Institute Italia.

Political career

He is Minister of Economy and Finance since May 2008 and a member of the Italian Parliament since 1994. He was Vice President of the Chamber of Deputies from May 4, 2006 to May 7, 2008. He was Deputy Prime Minister from April 23, 2005 to May 3, 2006. He was Minister of Economy and Finance from June 11, 2001 to July 3, 2004 and from September 22, 2005 to May 4, 2006. He served as Finance Minister from May 1994 to January 1995.
